water, river, source
Every day for nearly three decades I have crossed an ancient chalkstream, the river Frome, as it wends its way on a 35-mile journey from a crystal clear, aquifer source in Evershot - to the hustle and bustle of Poole Harbour. A stately stone bridge provides a perfect vantage point to observe it’s changing moods, colours and wildlife - an annual, regenerative rhythm never seems to fail or falter.
This project ‘Water, River, Source’ is providing me an opportunity to explore, read, record and investigate this local river more deeply, and be better informed to combine artistic and creative inquiry with environmental science. My three current lines of enquiry are:
microscopic coccolithophores
caddisfly cases
riverbed pebbles
Sensitivity to nature in my practice is foremost and for some years I have used natural dyes and locally sourced textile fibres, as well as low-temperature, smoke-firing ceramic techniques .
Rather than presenting nature as a separate subject, my responses will focus on the ecology of a familiar place to combine creative engagement with meaningful environmental awareness.
WESCA Members explore their individual lines of enquiry in a variety
of media including paint, ceramics, film and textiles
to present an interim show of resolved and ‘in progress’ work:
2 - 8 September 10 - 4 daily
The Gallery, Shaftesbury Arts Centre

A final show will showcase this project in 2027.
